I wrote this story two years ago…
Since I realized my 6-year-old girl (now 8) has a boy crush (story for another day), and it occurred to me that 15 years down the line she’ll probably have forgotten everything about him, I decided to put my own first crush story out here. 😆
So I asked myself, who was my first crush?
Was it the boy in our last year of primary school who cornered me with another boy and asked me what name I’d like to be called in future: Mrs A or Mrs B? 🤣🤣 He was A and the other boy was B. And even though I ran off, I’d lie in bed, sit by myself, and get lost in thought imagining myself as future Mrs A. Of course it was going to be him; the other boy stood no chance. The steeze and rizz hit so hard that even years later, the thought comforted me in my cold bed in secondary school when most of my mates started talking about boyfriends. And even though I hadn’t seen my future hubby since we graduated from primary school, he was still my boo.
Yet, this post isn’t about him. 🤦♀️🤭
My first real crush was the one I had when I was in SS1 or SS2. Whenever I came home for the holidays, my sister and I would always go fetch water from a house on our street that had a tap outside supplying the whole street. People would form long lines with their containers and sit around until it got to their turn.
He lived nearby, and I think he was a class ahead of me in a public school then. Whenever I stole a glance at him, he was always staring, and I’d quickly avert my gaze. Steal a glance, catch him staring, avert gaze. We never talked, but I thought about him all the time. He was tall, dark, and so handsome (awwwww, my heart 😭), and his name was Femi (red flag, right? 🤣). But “Femi” had no bad PR then.
So even when we didn’t need water at home, I’d disturb my sister to follow me so I could catch a glimpse of my heartthrob.
“Why aren’t you married?” you may ask.
Well, one holiday when I was home, my crush started trying to get my attention (yay!!). He would “su su su” at me, but I’d hasten my footsteps and hurry home. 😫 Why? I honestly do not know. Maybe because I was a very shy person (still am), or maybe because he was always in the company of other street boys, most of whom I didn’t really have a rapport with.
Anyway, one evening, as I was hurrying away from him, he was hurrying after me — the start of a good love story, right? Imagine the story we would have told our grandkids: “Your grandpa was chasing after me, caught up with me, and we both fell in love.” I digress.
He finally caught up with me, and I had no choice but to stay and hear him out.
So there we stood by the roadside, praying my mum wouldn’t see me talking to a boy because we were already close to my house. I didn’t even know how to tell him we should postpone the meeting, and we couldn’t even look each other in the eyes because, of course, I was finally going to have a conversation with my crush.
Then he opened his mouth and said:
“I calling you yesterday, you no answer me.”
What?!
I couldn’t believe my ears.
You can imagine how the story ended. Yes, I looked him in the eyes, told him I had to go, and lived the rest of my life avoiding him.
That, my people, is the story of my first crush… and how it got crushed.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
